Since CakePHP major advantage is automation, Zend Framework is more "out-of-the-box" - a drawback for some, a definite resource for others.
The fact that you can use libraries quite independently has a major advantage to me: I take what I need, accordingly to how my application should look like.
The next step with fromscratch will be building a search engine upon Zend's Lucene classes: Zend components loaded into CakePHP as 3rd party libraries and so on...
